New Guidelines for Bulgarian Fonts
Working on the overhaul of government websites in Bulgaria, one of the challenges I faced was ensuring that the fonts we used weren’t just functional but aligned with modern standards and accessibility guidelines. The government decided to move away from outdated fonts and adopt ones that would better reflect the professional and modern image of the state’s digital platforms.
This meant we needed to implement fonts that supported the Cyrillic alphabet properly and were optimized for readability across a variety of devices, from desktop monitors to smartphones. In my experience, picking the right font for a government website is more critical than many might think—it’s about much more than aesthetic preferences. It’s about accessibility, usability, and ensuring that citizens can easily navigate and understand the content on the site.
After much deliberation and testing, we decided on fonts like Sofia Sans, Overpass, Montserrat, and Raleway. These fonts weren’t just a random choice; they were carefully selected because they provide excellent support for Bulgarian Cyrillic characters, ensuring that text displayed correctly on all modern browsers and mobile platforms.
One of the things I appreciate most about this update is how it also took accessibility into account. We wanted to make sure that the fonts we selected were not only visually appealing but also easy to read for everyone, including people with visual impairments. This means that choosing the right typography isn’t just about making things look good—it’s about making sure that the site is usable for a broad range of people.
This experience reinforced the idea that web design for government websites isn’t just about creating something functional. It’s about creating something that citizens can trust, that works well across all devices, and that ensures accessibility for everyone. It’s rewarding to see how something as simple as a font can have such a significant impact on how users experience and interact with government platforms online.
